Bengaluru summers get hotter each year. Here is a practical, vet-informed routine that keeps dogs and cats safe — covering hydration, walk timing, paw protection, and the warning signs every pet parent should know.
Bengaluru has historically been seen as a "mild-weather" city, but recent summers have consistently crossed 35°C with high UV indices and longer dry spells. That is meaningfully harder on pets than many parents realise. Dogs and cats cannot sweat the way we do — they manage heat primarily through panting and paw-pad contact with cooler surfaces. When the air is hot and the pavement is hotter, both of those cooling mechanisms start to fail.
Heat stress in pets is not just about comfort. It is a genuine medical risk. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, heatstroke can develop rapidly in dogs and can be fatal without immediate care. The good news: almost all heat-related incidents in urban pets are preventable with a simple seasonal routine.
The most impactful change you can make this summer is the time of your pet's walks. In Bengaluru, pavement and asphalt temperatures can exceed 55°C by 11 AM and stay high until well after 5 PM. That is hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds. A simple rule: if you cannot comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws.
Every pet parent "knows" to keep water available, but summer hydration is about access and temperature as much as it is about volume. A single bowl in the kitchen is not enough if your pet spends most of the day elsewhere. Place water stations in at least two rooms, and keep at least one bowl on the balcony or near a favourite resting spot.
Add ice cubes to the bowl in the afternoon — many pets will drink noticeably more from cool water. For dogs that are reluctant drinkers, a slow fountain or a splash of low-sodium chicken broth in the water often does the trick. Wet food and water-rich treats (cucumber, watermelon without seeds, ice-cube "treats" with a few blueberries inside) supplement hydration meaningfully.
Watch for early dehydration signs: dry or tacky gums, sunken eyes, reduced skin elasticity (gently pinch the skin at the back of the neck — it should snap back immediately), and lethargy. If you see any of these, move your pet to a cool space, offer water, and call your vet if the symptoms do not resolve within the hour.
Paw pad burns are one of the most common summer injuries in Bengaluru and they are often missed until the damage is significant. Pads that contact 55°C pavement can develop red, raw, blistered skin within minutes. The pet may not flinch in the moment but will show pain later — licking paws excessively, limping, or refusing their next walk.
Prevention is simple: walk during cool hours on grass or shaded paths, and rinse your dog's paws with cool water after every outdoor walk. For frequent outdoor dogs, consider pet paw wax or lightweight booties. Inspect paws weekly for cracks, redness, or debris between toes — this takes 30 seconds and catches problems early.
Most Bengaluru homes do not have full AC. That is fine — pets do not need a cold room, they need a stable, ventilated one. Keep a fan running in the pet's resting area, draw sheer curtains to block direct sun, and place cooling mats or damp towels on the floor for them to lie on. Tile floors naturally stay cooler than carpet — let your pet choose their spot.
For long-coated breeds, a professional summer groom (often called a "summer trim") does not mean shaving to the skin — that actually removes their natural heat protection. A skilled groomer will thin the undercoat, shorten feathering, and reduce matting while preserving the guard coat. This is a good month to schedule that visit.
Recognise the escalation from mild heat stress to medical emergency. If you see any of the following, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately, wet their paws and belly with room-temperature water (not ice), and call a vet.
Cats are more efficient at managing heat than dogs, but they are not immune. Indoor-only cats can overheat in small, unventilated rooms, especially top-floor apartments. Keep water stations plentiful, refresh them twice a day, and avoid carriers or transport during peak afternoon hours.
Long-haired cats benefit from increased brushing through summer — daily five-minute sessions reduce undercoat density and cut heat retention. If your cat is panting (which is unusual in cats), treat it as a significant warning sign and call a vet.
A pre-summer vet check is one of the highest-value appointments of the year. A vet can assess your pet's weight, heart and respiratory health, hydration baseline, and breed-specific heat sensitivity — then advise on exercise limits and any red flags to monitor. This is especially important for brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Persians) and senior pets, who carry disproportionate heat risk.
