Grooming a Golden Retriever in Bangalore. What That Double Coat Actually Needs
Golden Retrievers were bred for cold, wet Scottish weather. They are now living in apartments near Hosur Road in Bangalore's consistent warmth. They adapt well. Their coats do not manage themselves here. Here is what actually needs to happen.

The undercoat problem nobody warns you about
Goldens have a double coat: a soft, dense undercoat beneath a longer outer layer. In colder climates, this undercoat sheds twice a year in large blows. In Bangalore's consistent heat, shedding is continuous and lower in volume per episode but never stops.
When the undercoat is not regularly brushed out, it compacts. The worst spots are around the neck, behind the ears, in the armpit area, and at the tail base. Once compacted, the options are careful de-matting -- uncomfortable for the dog and time-consuming -- or clipping the mat out entirely. Prevention is far easier than either.
A slicker brush or undercoat rake used two to three times a week prevents matting before it starts. If your Golden walks around complexes or spends time on a balcony, daily brushing during monsoon is better because wet coats mat faster.
We see Goldens regularly in Prestige Tech Cloud and surrounding complexes. A common pattern: the owner brushes the outer coat at home but misses the undercoat entirely because the top layer looks fine. By the time we arrive, there are dense mats behind both ears and under the collar. The dog has been uncomfortable for weeks without the owner realising.
How often to book a professional session
Every 6 to 8 weeks for a full session: bath, blow-out, coat trim, paw trim, nails, ears. Between sessions, regular brushing at home handles the day-to-day maintenance.
In April and May, some pet parents ask for a shorter trim than usual. Not a shave a tighter trim that makes the dog more comfortable in peak Bangalore heat. That is a reasonable request and one we handle regularly.
The shaving question and why the answer is no
This gets searched constantly, and most people get it wrong. The logic seems obvious: less coat, cooler dog. It does not work that way.
The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold. Shaving removes the outer protective layer, leaves the undercoat exposed, makes the dog hotter, and removes the UV protection the coat provides. It also damages the coat texture permanently in many dogs.
Never shave a double-coat breed like a Golden Retriever for summer comfort. It causes more harm than relief. A proper blow-out and trim is the correct approach. If a groomer recommends shaving a Golden for summer without a medical reason, that is a red flag.
Products that work in Bangalore's water
Oatmeal-based shampoos work well for Goldens with sensitive skin, which is a large portion of them. A conditioning treatment after each bath helps the outer coat. Bangalore's water can be hard in some areas, and a good conditioner makes a visible difference to texture.
If your Golden is scratching more than usual or the coat looks dull rather than shiny, it is usually one of three causes: diet, water quality, or a skin issue worth mentioning at the next grooming session.
Quick checklist for Golden Retriever owners in Bangalore:
• Brush 2 to 3 times per week, targeting the undercoat, not just the surface
• Book a professional session every 6 to 8 weeks
• Schedule a de-shedding treatment in April before peak summer shedding
• Never shave the coat for summer relief
• Use a pH-balanced shampoo designed for dogs, not human products

Grooming advice for new pet parents is everywhere, and most of it contradicts itself. Start early. Wait for vaccines. Do it yourself. Leave it to professionals. Here is the version that actually makes sense if you are in an apartment in Jayanagar, HSR Layout, Koramangala, Indiranagar, CV Raman Nagar, etc.
Home grooming is not automatically the right choice for every dog. It is the right choice for most. Here is how the comparison actually plays out, based on what pet parents in Electronic City, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Bellandur, Marathalli, HSR Layout and Koramangala tell us after switching from salons.
Most pet parents in Electronic City Phase 1 and Phase 2 have one question before their first session with us. Not about the price. Not about the products.
It is always some version of: where does it actually happen inside my flat?
It is a fair question. And the answer is simpler than most people expect.
